Vintage Oak Fitted Gentleman’s Wardrobe – Original Labelled Interior
A handsome and characterful vintage oak fitted wardrobe, offering an unusually well-equipped interior with plenty of original period features.
The wardrobe has two panelled doors with attractive oak grain and subtle decorative motifs to the upper panels. Carved detailing runs around the top cornice and lower plinth, with the whole piece standing on four substantial feet.
The real charm of this wardrobe is the fitted interior. The left-hand section provides hanging space with a pull-out hanging rail, upper shelf labelled “Hats”, a shoe rack to the base, together with a mirror and small shelf fitted to the inside of the door.
The right-hand side provides four fixed shelves and two drawers, retaining their charming original labels for Underwear, Shirts, Socks, Collars, Pyjamas and Sundries. These period details give the wardrobe plenty of personality and make it particularly appealing as a practical piece of vintage bedroom furniture.
The two front doors open and close correctly. The handles are mismatched; the left-hand fitting would originally have been a drop-style handle, but this is how the wardrobe came to us. The existing handle can be turned to operate the opening mechanism.
As expected for a vintage piece, there are various marks, scratches and signs of previous use. The right-hand side has more noticeable marking, including areas where pictures or stickers appear to have been attached many years ago. The left side is generally in better condition. There is some chipping around the rear edges of the decorative moulding.
The back left foot has two screws securing it from inside the wardrobe. The foot feels solid and the screws do not protrude externally.
A wonderfully practical and unusual wardrobe with a great deal of original character. Please note that this is a single-piece wardrobe and does not dismantle, so access should be checked carefully before purchasing.
