Victorian Mahogany Chest With Marble Top
Victorian Mahogany Chest With Marble Top
Possibly French, mid–late 19th century
A striking and substantial Victorian mahogany chest of drawers, showcasing exceptional presence and quality craftsmanship. The piece is surmounted by a removable white marble top with subtle grey veining, offering both elegance and practicality.
The richly figured mahogany carcass displays attractive colour and grain throughout, standing on solid bracket feet which give the chest a grounded, architectural stance. The chest retains a pleasing sense of age with a warm, original patina.
Four generously sized drawers, all running smoothly, are fitted with decorative circular brass centre handles. These replace the original locks, which were historically removed — a common and sympathetic period alteration that now enhances the chest’s visual symmetry.
There is historic worm present, now fully inactive and treated, with no impact on the integrity of the piece. Evidence of a historical alteration to the base can be seen, though the chest remains extremely solid, stable, and notably heavy. General surface wear and minor marks are consistent with age and add to its authenticity rather than detract.
Overall, this is a handsome and characterful antique chest, equally suited to a traditional interior or as a statement piece in a more contemporary setting.
