Rare Regency Extending Dining Table by Samuel Hawkins, with Leaf Cabinet
Rare Regency Extending Dining Table by Samuel Hawkins, with Leaf Cabinet – Seats Twelve in Grand Style
Large Regency Extending Dining Table by Samuel Hawkins, Patentee, Bishopsgate London
A magnificent early 19th century plum pudding mahogany extending dining table by Samuel Hawkins of 5 Bishopsgate Street, London, retaining its original brass maker’s plaque. Hawkins was a noted London cabinetmaker and patentee, active in the 1820s–1840s, celebrated for his ingenious extending mechanisms and exceptional craftsmanship.
This grand table extends with four additional leaves, all housed in the original matching cabinet designed to store them. When fully extended it will comfortably seat twelve diners, making it a highly practical and impressive centrepiece for large gatherings. The patented extending mechanism works smoothly and securely, a testament to Hawkins’ innovation.
Constructed to the very highest standard, the table is exceptionally heavy and solid, with a beautifully figured top and elegant legs on original brass caps and castors.
Condition Note: There are some faint white marks to the top in places, along with light surface marks and tiny chips, and scuffs to one of the legs, all commensurate with age and use. In addition, there is minor loss of veneer to the cabinet and very minimal signs of historic worm, which is now inactive and has been fully treated. These are minor considerations and do not detract from the overall presentation, which remains superb.

376.5cm long (148” / 12ft 5”)
