Victorian Oleograph Portrait of William E. Gladstone MP – Robert A. Muller
An impressive Victorian oleographic portrait of William Ewart Gladstone MP, the celebrated British statesman who served four terms as Prime Minister during the 19th century.
The portrait is an oleographic reproduction after Robert A. Muller and retains its original publisher’s label to the reverse, identifying it as an “Oleographic Reproduction, Original and Copyright” and stating that it was published by the National Fine Art Association, London. The reverse of the canvas also bears the National Fine Art Association Copyright Picture / Registered Trade Mark stamp.
Presented in its substantial decorative period frame with gilt inner detailing, the portrait has a wonderfully aged appearance and makes a particularly striking decorative piece for a library, study, hallway or traditional interior.
The portrait bears “Robert A. Muller” to the upper left. There is a small area of impact damage towards the upper left of the image, beneath the signature, as pictured. The frame also shows evidence of historic woodworm, alongside other marks and wear consistent with its age.
A characterful piece of Victorian political and social history, made particularly interesting by the survival of its original National Fine Art Association label and copyright markings.
