Late Victorian Mahogany Glazed Bookcase
 
 
A charming and unusually compact late Victorian glazed bookcase, offering plenty of useful display and storage space without the imposing height of many bookcases from the period.
 
 
The upper section features two glazed doors, both opening and closing correctly, with two adjustable internal shelves providing flexible space for books, china or decorative pieces.
 
 
The lower section has a useful slim drawer, fitted with decorative brass handles. These are not believed to be the original handles, although they are older replacements and sit comfortably with the character of the piece. Below are two panelled cupboard doors opening to reveal one internal shelf.
 
 
The bookcase comes with three keys – one each for the glazed upper section, drawer and lower cupboard.
 
 
Condition: Solid and sturdy overall with general marks, knocks and wear consistent with its age. There is evidence of historic woodworm, which is inactive and has been treated. The sides are generally good for its age, while there is some chipping and loss to the veneer around the lower base/foot and bracket areas. The surface between the upper and lower sections also shows some age-related wear.
 
 
It is possible that the upper and lower sections may at some point have been married together. However, the top section shows evidence of having been seated on the base for a considerable period, so it may equally be original or simply a particularly good period match. We therefore make no definitive attribution either way.
 
 
At just under 170cm high, its lower, almost “stumpy” proportions give it considerable charm and make it particularly useful where a full-height Victorian bookcase would be too imposing.
