Edwardian Mahogany Pedestal Desk
Edwardian Mahogany Pedestal Desk with Red Leather Writing Surface
A distinguished Edwardian mahogany pedestal desk, displaying all the hallmarks of early 20th-century craftsmanship. The rectangular top is inset with a richly toned red leather writing skiver, bordered by a moulded edge and enhanced with a time-softened patina. A small hole and a light tear near the rear centre are consistent with gentle age and authentic use.
Below, a central frieze drawer is flanked by two banks of four graduated drawers, offering generous storage. All drawers are fitted with brass swing handles, the four lower drawers featuring an alternate design that adds a touch of individuality to the piece’s otherwise symmetrical form.
Raised on squat cabriole legs, the desk has an elegant, balanced stance, both solid and practical. The right-hand pedestal includes two drawers with original lining compartments, reflecting thoughtful Edwardian design.
The mahogany has mellowed beautifully, with the surface marks and drawer wear one would expect of a well-loved, solid, and heavy writing desk that has seen a century of careful use.
A superb, characterful piece for a study or library — combining functionality, proportion, and quiet dignity.
