Edwardian Mahogany Bureau Bookcase
Edwardian Mahogany Bureau Bookcase – Waring & Gillow Style
A beautiful vintage mahogany bureau bookcase, featuring an unusual combination of a writing bureau, glazed bookcase and cupboard storage. A substantial, well-made piece with lovely colour, attractive grain and traditional detailing.
The design is very reminiscent of Waring & Gillow furniture, although there is no maker’s label present, so we cannot confirm the manufacturer.
The right-hand section features a tall glazed door, which opens and closes correctly and has a working lock and key. Inside are five adjustable shelves, offering plenty of space for displaying books, ornaments or collectibles. A couple of the metal shelf supports differ, although all shelves sit securely.
The left-hand section features two small upper drawers, a traditional fall-front bureau writing section and further storage beneath, including a drawer and a double-door cupboard. The bureau opens to reveal a fitted interior with small compartments and an internal drawer, with chains supporting the writing surface when open.
The mahogany has a lovely rich colour throughout, complemented by decorative brass-style handles and attractive carved detailing.
Condition: Overall, a lovely solid and heavy piece in good vintage condition. The top surfaces show some wear consistent with age and use, although nothing particularly significant. The sides are generally in good condition, with some minor marks and signs of use throughout. There is some distressing to the mahogany around the right-hand door handle, as pictured. The doors, drawers and bureau section all function as intended.
A charming and practical piece of traditional furniture, equally suited to a living room, study, hallway or home office.
