Edwardian Maple & Co. Marble Top Washstand with Mirror
A handsome Edwardian marble-topped washstand by Maple & Co., offering beautiful period character, attractive timber and particularly lovely decorative detailing.
The substantial base features three drawers and a single cupboard, with attractive inlaid detailing to the upper drawer fronts and cupboard door. The original Maple & Co. label is present inside the cupboard, adding provenance and interest to the piece.
The drawers are fitted with decorative brass handles, although the lower drawer handles differ from those above, as pictured. The cupboard retains an attractive period escutcheon.
Above sits a beautifully coloured marble top, which remains in good overall condition. There are some old fixing/screw holes to the marble, something commonly encountered on washstands of this type.
The decorative mirror back incorporates a central shaped mirror, two small drawers and graduated side shelves. We do not believe the mirror section is original to the washstand, as the existing fixing holes in the marble do not correspond with it; nevertheless, it is an attractive addition and complements the base very well.
The base shows some general wear to the sides and other age-related marks, but remains solid and sturdy. It stands on four castors and rolls very well.
For transportation, the washstand separates into three sections: the mirror back, marble top and base cabinet.
