Antique Continental Heavily Carved Open Bookcase
Antique Continental Heavily Carved Open Bookcase
An impressive and highly decorative antique Continental carved cabinet with striking Gothic and ecclesiastical influence throughout. Finished in a deep dark stain, the piece is richly adorned with intricate hand carved detailing including masks, foliage, mythical beasts, birds and ornate scrollwork.
The upper open shelving section is framed by two carved religious style figures — one appearing as a robed lady standing over a beast, the other a bearded monk or saint holding a book. Above are further carved faces, fruit and floral motifs beneath a dramatic oversized cornice.
The lower cupboard section features two heavily carved cupboard doors with exceptional relief carving depicting birds, urns, scrolls and grotesque mask handles. Internally the base provides useful enclosed storage space with a shelf inside.
A wonderfully atmospheric statement piece ideal for a period, Gothic, ecclesiastical or maximalist interior.
Condition is consistent with age and use. There are various scuffs, edge wear and surface marks throughout, particularly around the lower base and shelving surfaces. Historic wear and imperfections add to its antique character.
